The Dales & Western Yorkshire

Geographically, the Yorkshire Dales stretch north from the market and spa towns of Settle, Skipton, Ilkley and Harrogate. Of all the dales Swaledale, Wensleydale, Wharfedale, Malhamdale and Ryedale are the most well known, but there are many other lesser known dales waiting to be discovered.

To the east the countryside becomes gentler, sloping off to the vale of York and to south and south west lie Bronte country and the industrial cities of Bradford and Leeds.

The Yorkshire Dales are unique, this beautiful place offers a delightful range of things to do and places to visit amongst the stunning Dales limestone scenery.

The Yorkshire Dales is home to a varied collection of landscapes, from heather-topped moors to colorful hay-meadows. There are limestone cliffs and crags, waterfalls and underground labyrinths of potholes and caves and beautiful Abbeys and Churches. Traditional stone-built villages are set amongst rolling farmland with stone barns and drystone walls.

Two of western Yorkshires most popular places must be Haworth, home of the Bronte’s and Holmfirth, the setting for ‘Last of the Summer Wine’, both are included on this site.

The links with pictures at the bottom of this page will take you to a few of my favorite areas in Western Yorkshire.

This is the classic view of Bolton Priory taken from the far bank of the River Wharfe, near the stepping stones.

Holmfirth (Summer Wine Country)

A view looking towards Holmfirth town centre, the world cup football competition was on at the time hence the flag. I believe we were still in with a chance at this time.

Some of the rock formations have been given names. One formation is the Dancing Bear, the head of the bear can be seen on the right of the horizon in the above photo.

I love Yorkshire! With some of my increased leisure time I decided to try and produce a web site showing many of my favorite places to visit in Yorkshire. I have been taking regular holidays there for the past 20 years and consider it to be one of the most beautiful counties in Great Britain. Feedback.
